Police are investigating after a firearm was shot at a vehicle in Blackmans Bay this afternoon, sparking a major response across Hobart’s southern suburbs.

The alleged incident happened on Gourlay Street shortly after 1:30pm on Monday.

Tasmania Police said the vehicle and another car believed to be linked to the incident had left the scene by the time officers arrived.

“No injuries have been reported,” a police spokesperson said.

Pulse understands the Special Operations Group (SOG) Bearcat was deployed and seen heading along the Southern Outlet prior to 2pm.

Police cars were also spotted at both ends of the Southern Outlet, including at the Mount Nelson turn-off and near the industrial area at Browns Road.

A police helicopter is currently circling low over Kingston around Summerleas Road and Kingston High School.

“Police are responding to reports of a disturbance in Blackmans Bay this afternoon,” the police spokesperson said.

“People in the area may notice an increased police presence while investigations are underway.”

At 3:30pm, police confirmed a man had been taken into custody and a firearm seized.

“The man was arrested near Blackmans Bay beach a short time ago,” a spokesperson said.

“Police are continuing to investigate the incident. There is no evidence of any ongoing risk to the public.”
