A elderly walker who became lost during “challenging” weather conditions on Sunday afternoon has been rescued after a large search overnight.
Police say the 82-year-old man lost his way near Walkers Lookout on Flinders Island during a cold night with “strong winds, small hail and driving rain.”
SES, Parks and Wildlife Service staff and the Rescue Helicopter joined Police in searching for the man, who was found just after midnight in the early hours of Monday morning.
“The walker was taken for medical assessment following his exposure to the elements,” Police said.
In an unrelated incident, two others were also rescued after they became lost on a track at Quamby Bluff near Deloraine overnight.
Inspector Luke Manhood said weather conditions in Tasmania are capable of changing quickly.
“We’re reminding people to be prepared before embarking on walks in the Tasmanian wilderness.”
“It is important that anyone planning on exploring Tasmania’s wilderness or alpine areas carries the necessary equipment to keep themselves safe should they run into difficulty, even if you are a local or experienced bush walker.”
