All aboard! After many years of lobbying and thousands of hours of volunteer dedication, the Tasmanian Transport Museum has been given the all-clear to use the main South Line!
Since receiving accreditation from the National Rail Safety Regulator, the museum has started running classic C-class passenger steam trains along the South Line, and hopes to eventually run all the way from Glenorchy to Bridgewater.
The railway line hasn’t operated since June 2014, when the last commercial train departed from Hobart.
The revival of the track has been a labour of love for the museum’s committed volunteers, who have donated 5,000 combined hours of their time and effort to ensure the track and rolling stock meet the Australian accreditation safety standards.

Glenorchy Mayor Bec Thomas was one of the many public figures at the official celebration on Thursday, which fell on International Museum Day and in National Volunteer Week.
“Well done to President Rod Prince and all of the volunteers at the TTMS, and thank you for what you contribute to our community,” she said.
Tickets are now available for the first public rides here.
