A bystander has been hailed a hero after he rescued two children from a rip at Blackmans Bay Beach.
The “near-miss” unfolded on Wednesday afternoon when a group of children swimming near the rocks were caught in a strong rip current.
“Fortunately, a vigilant bystander noticed the situation, grabbed a foam bodyboard and used his experience as a surfer to swim out and rescue two children,” a Surf Life Saving Tasmania spokesperson said.
The children were reportedly shaken but unharmed.

“This heroic rescue is a timely reminder to be prepared ahead of the long weekend,” the spokesperson said.
“Know the risks, rips can be strong and unpredictable. Know how to spot them and what to do if caught.”

The spokesperson also urged beachgoers to watch children closely and discuss what to do if they or a friend get into trouble.
“Only enter the water to assist if you’re experienced and take flotation with you,” they said.
“Stay safe and enjoy the water!”
