An increase in police patrols throughout the Hobart CBD this year has had a ‘significant positive impact’ on the overall safety of the community, a senior Tasmania Police officer says.
Since the intensified patrols began in May in a bid to stamp out public place assaults and disorderly behaviour, Officer in Charge of the Hobart Division Inspector John Toohey has noted a decline in incidents.
“The city has seen a 23% drop in public place assaults, a 22% drop in public order incidents and an 18% drop in reported disturbances,” Toohey said.
“Although we have more to do, these results highlight the effectiveness of the proactive measures taken by Tasmania Police to address safety concerns and maintain public order in the heart of Hobart.”

“The increased police presence in the Hobart CBD is proving to be a successful strategy in curbing public place assaults and disorderly behaviour.”
He said the CBD patrols will continue and urged anyone witnessing illegal or antisocial behaviour to report it to police on 131 444, 000 in an emergency or Crime Stoppers.
