Hobart man accused of stealing car, hitting pedestrians in Bali

A Hobart man has been arrested in Bali after allegedly stealing a car, hitting two pedestrians and setting the vehicle on fire.

Police allege the man approached a local who was parking his Toyota Avanza outside Eden The Residence at the Sea in Seminyak around 12:30am on Sunday.

According to officers, as reported by the Daily Mail, the Australian allegedly banged on the car windows, forced the driver out and sped off in the stolen SUV.

The victim and a security guard initially gave chase but abandoned their pursuit when the car reached dangerous speeds.

During the getaway, the suspect is accused of hitting two people on nearby roads. Their condition remains unknown.

The car’s owner later used phone-tracking software to locate his belongings on a street about 8km away. When he arrived to find the vehicle gone, he called police.

Hours later, emergency crews were alerted to a car fire in the same area. The Denpasar Fire Brigade turned up at 5:30am to find the Toyota fully ablaze.

Video released by authorities shows the SUV engulfed in flames and pressed up against a building, with the fire also scorching the property’s awning.

No one was injured in the blaze, but the car was completely destroyed.

The man remains in custody at North Kuta Police Station.
