Two men accused of stealing more than $83,000 worth of fuel and running an illegal ‘petrol station operation’ have been charged.

The pair, aged 32 and 36, from Warrane were arrested by police in the early hours of Tuesday morning following information from a member of the public.

The men are suspected of obtaining the fuel from various locations across Hobart.

The substantial volume suggests they stole around 40,000 litres, roughly equivalent to a full tanker truck, based on an average price of $2.08 per litre.

Both have been held in custody and will appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court next month on computer related fraud and stealing charges.

Police are urging anyone who may have purchased cheap fuel outside of a licensed petrol station to come forward.

“Information about the matter should be provided to police on 131 444 (quote OR740090) or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or at crimestopperstas.com.au,” a spokesperson said.

“Information can be provided anonymously.”
