Dress for Success Tasmania has opened a temporary pop-up shop in the middle of the Hobart CBD, with every dollar raised going straight back into its free programs for Tasmanian women.
The store is on the corner of Collins and Elizabeth streets in the old Metro building.
It sells surplus clothing that is not suitable for the charity’s clients, with prices starting at $5.
Georgina Farrell, the charity’s community engagement and partnerships manager, said the shop was a new way of doing things.
“We’re trialing this as a different option because we normally have sales out in the communities,” she told Pulse.
The charity helps women get into work by breaking down barriers like clothing.
It also runs career support, including help with resumes, job applications and interview preparation.
Farrell said the response had been “absolutely fabulous”.
“It’s been lovely to have people in the space and supporting us,” she said.
“People have been saying how lovely the space is.”
She said the pop-up was giving quality clothing a second chance and keeping it out of landfill.
Spring dresses have been popular as the weather warms up.
Farrell started with the charity as a volunteer before taking on her current role.
“It just really aligns with my values of giving people a chance,” she said.
“I think we know that, you know, once people can obtain employment, it gives people the choice of all different things.”
This is the charity’s sixth year in Tasmania. It is part of a global organisation with affiliates around the world.
The shop is open Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, from 12:30pm to 4pm on weekdays and 10am to 2pm on Saturdays.
“Every purchase powers our purpose,” Farrell said.
