A glowing orange light rising above Hobart’s eastern horizon had some residents briefly fearing a bushfire had broken behind Mount Rumney on the city’s eastern shore tonight.
The glow appeared behind the hills shortly after nightfall, lighting up low cloud and haze across the sky, with Pulse receiving news tips from locals worried a bushfire had ignited.

As it climbed higher, the source became clear. It was the moon.
The moon appeared unusually large and deeply coloured while sitting low in the sky.
The striking display was caused by the moon’s position close to the horizon, pushing its glow through tonight’s cloudy and foggy sky.
Although it was not quite a full moon, it remained more than 90% illuminated.
