The Friends School, an elite Hobart private school, has reintroduced mandatory mask wearing for all students in years 7 to 10 in an effort to ‘curb the spread of the virus’.
The measure will come into affect for one week from next Monday.
Deputy Principal Sean O’Rourke, during an interview on ABC Radio, explained that the decision was prompted by the historical trend of rising COVID-19 cases towards the end of the school term.
“It’s usually the end of the term our numbers start increasing pretty high, and so it’s early, it’s only week four at the moment of a 10 week term,” he said.
“So we’re just trying to see what this does and trying to come up with a strategy of trying to be a bit proactive”.
The Tasmanian Health Department has reassured the community that the current COVID-19 risk is “low”.
