A fuel reduction fire is currently burning on Mount Nelson in Hobart as part of Tasmania’s statewide Fuel Reduction Program, the Tasmania Fire service say.
The operation, which involves fire crews and agencies, is expected to continue over the next few days.
Chief Officer Dermot Barry has advised residents of the Mount Nelson area that they may see smoke and flames during the operation, but they should not be alarmed.
“Fuel reduction burns such as this are designed to reduce the bushfire risk to the community and complements other fuel reduction activities undertaken in the area,” he said.

Fire crews will be on the ground patrolling the fire throughout the duration of the planned burn.
Chief Officer Barry also highlighted how similar burns in the Mount Nelson area helped to quickly suppress an accidental bushfire off Oberon Court on Mount Nelson, which started in February 2022.

He said that this aided in significantly reducing the intensity of the bushfire, making it easier for firefighters to control it.
