A Hobart taxi driver has been left shaken after a terrifying ordeal outside Northgate Shopping Centre in Glenorchy.
The incident unfolded when a man and a woman approached a taxi cab and asked for a free ride.
The driver declined the request and asked for upfront payment, which prompted the woman to lash out.
“She kicked the cab doors and slammed it very hard,” the driver told Pulse.
The pair then ran inside the shopping centre, before emerging just minutes later where they allegedly began throwing hot coffee and drinks at the taxi.
The driver said the pair then allegedly threw chairs and trolleys.
It’s the latest in a string of racially-motivated attacks on Tasmanian taxi drivers, an issue the Hobart Taxi Drivers Association say is getting worse.
In April, four youths were accused of targeting a number of parked taxis and their drivers in the dark of night, as first reported by Pulse.
The story prompted former Premier and current Migrant Resource Centre Chair Peter Gutwein to embark on a 350km journey from Burnie to Hobart, raising awareness for Tasmania’s multi-cultural community.
Anyone who witnesses an attack is urged to contact police.
