Hobart’s historic Bathurst Street Post Shop, which opened its doors almost 69 years ago, is set to close in August.
Australia Post said it was a “difficult decision” to close the shop, citing a decrease in customer demand.
“The central Hobart area is very well-serviced, with six post offices within a two-kilometre radius, including the Hobart GPO only 500m away,” a spokesperson said.
“Meanwhile, the Bathurst St outlet has seen nearly a 25 per cent drop in customer visits over the past five years.”

“All Bathurst St Post Shop team members will be re-allocated into positions at surrounding outlets or closer to home.”
“We apologise to customers for any inconvenience, and look forward to welcoming them at one of our other nearby outlets.”
However, the closure of the Bathurst Street shop has sparked concerns over parking issues, particularly among businesses relying on access to the GPO on Elizabeth Street for parcel deliveries.
The store will close on August 11.
