Metal levels in Hobart’s River Derwent have declined, according to the latest report card.
The Derwent Estuary program report says the improvement is the result of groundwater being captured at the zinc works.

Despite the good news, several species of fish still have levels which remain well above the national Food Safety standards.
On Tuesday, the Tasmanian Health Department issued a ‘do not eat’ warning for wild shellfish caught in areas on Tasmania’s East Coast.
Meantime, the water quality on Hobart’s eastern shore also improved, with most swimming beaches classified as good or fair.
