Hobart’s Uni Bar will close its doors this weekend after 49 years of operation.

The iconic venue will host its final two shows as part of its “Last Drinks” series, featuring Tasmanian rock band Luca Brasi on Friday, followed by indie rock outfit Old Mervs on Saturday.

The closure comes as a result of the University of Tasmania’s Sandy Bay redevelopment, with the venue’s lease not being renewed.

Licensee Brendan Self said the venue would go out with a fitting celebration.

“While it’s sad to say goodbye, we’re thrilled to send off the Uni Bar with two incredible nights featuring Luca Brasi and Old Mervs this weekend. It’s going to be a fitting farewell to a truly special place,” Self said.

The venue has already hosted several farewell performances in recent weeks, including shows by Peking Duk, Kisschasy and ONEFOUR.

The Uni Bar has a history of big performances

The Uni Bar has welcomed a remarkable lineup of Australian and international acts throughout its history, including Faith No More, Public Enemy, Paul Kelly, Cold Chisel, Powderfinger and Grinspoon.

Friday’s headliners Luca Brasi, hailing from St Helens, have become one of Australia’s most beloved rock bands.

Saturday’s closing act, Old Mervs, have built a reputation as Australia’s fastest rising indie-rock outfit, having completed four national headline tours and supported major acts including The Wombats and Liam Gallagher.
