Three homes on Hobart’s Dynnyrne Road are being demolished to make way for the construction of a fifth lane on the Southern Outlet.
The Southern Outlet Transit Lane project between Olinda Grove and Davey Street aims to alleviate traffic congestion for commuters from the Huon Valley and Kingston as they enter the CBD.
The new lane will operate as a ‘T3’ lane, requiring private vehicles to have at least three people to use it or risk a fine.
It will also be open to buses, taxis, motorbikes and emergency service vehicles.
Demolition work is expected to be completed by the end of the year, with construction of the transit lane slated to get underway in early 2025.
Early plans for the extra lane involved acquiring up to 17 properties, but revised plans reduced this number to just three – all of which were voluntary.
The Department of State Growth say ‘extensive investigations’ into the rock face at the proposed transit lane site have been conducted, with protective measures to be implemented to ‘minimise the risk of falling rocks’ during construction.
Other works include multiple hour-and-a-half road closures of a section of the Hobart-bound left-hand lane on Thursday 30 November and Monday 4 December from 6:30pm to 8:00pm.
“The early evening times have been chosen to minimise disruption to traffic, while not impacting nearby residents sleep. There will be some noise and dust, but we will ensure impacts are minimised as much as possible,” State Growth say.
Three year project timeline
November: Work starts on the Macquarie and Davey Streets Bus Improvement project, including the removal of some parking spaces and changes to parking on both sides of the two streets.
Late 2023: Construction of extended clearways and cycling enhancements on Macquarie and Davey Streets starts before scheduled completion in March.
Early 2024: Start of mostly night time Transit Lane Connector construction.
April 2024: Preparation works for Transit Lane, including rock face protection.
Early 2025: Major Transit Lane construction due to begin.
