Hundreds of Tasmanians gathered around Princes Wharf 1 in Hobart tonight to watch the Australian Matildas take on England in the FIFA World Cup.

Free live viewing events were held across Tasmania, with people cheering on the Matildas at PW1 in Hobart, UTAS Stadium in Launceston and Devonport’s Market Square.

Australia were defeated 3-1 in the game, bringing their home World Cup campaign to a disappointing end.

Sam Kerr’s spectacular goal, which briefly levelled the scores early in the second-half, will long be remembered – but so too, unfortunately, will Ellie Carpenter’s shocking defensive error minutes later which gifted England the lead once again.
