Telstra customers across Hobart may be without mobile connectivity this week as the communications giant works on upgrading a mobile tower in the city.

The project will begin later this morning and is expected to be completed by Sunday, resulting in some disruptions to coverage.

Telstra Tasmania General Manager Michael Patterson said the work to upgrade 4G and 5G coverage can only take place during daylight hours for safety reasons.

“We’ll only be switching off the site when we need to and have it back on as quickly as possible,” Patterson said.

“While coverage and capacity will decline during this time, we want to keep the amount of time the site is off air to an absolute minimum.”

Customers utilising the Telstra mobile network with mobile phones, EFTPOS machines, smartwatches or other devices may be affected, while 000 calls will continue to work as normal.

“Telstra has multiple base stations operating in Hobart and we anticipate impact to be minimal.”

The telco recommends customers instead connect to a Wi-Fi network for uninterrupted connectivity and to make the most of Wi-Fi calling during this period.
