The inaugural chairman of Tasmania’s new AFL team has been officially revealed as former Woolworths CEO Grant O’Brien.
O’Brien, who grew up playing football for Penguin on the North-West coast, is the current Tourism Tasmania chair and played a pivotal role in the groundwork for the 19th licence.
Former Premier Peter Gutwein was rumoured for the chairmanship, however many believed his appointment would have raised eyebrows.
The group behind ‘Yes AFL Team, YES Stadium’ have welcomed the decision, calling O’Brien the “perfect person for the job.”
Yes AFL Team Inc said O’Brien “will be able to both talk the talk and walk the walk with the AFL club presidents” as Tasmania begins the AFL journey.
“Grant is a former Penguin premiership player and played for Clarence. He understands what an important role football plays for young men and women on the North-West Coast and throughout Tasmania,” the supporter group said.
“Even more than that, he will be a marvellous advocate for what the AFL Stadium will deliver for the entire State.”
“As the chair of Tourism Tasmania, he understands how important visitors are to our Island.”
“The Stadium will contain a conference centre, bigger than now exists in Hobart.”
“The ability to draw 2000 people a week to Tasmania for conferences will have untold benefits to local business Statewide.”
“The Stadium will also provide a venue for major concerts and arts and cultural events.”
“The AFL Team and multi-purpose stadium will also deliver jobs – in its construction and ongoing operation.”
