An influenza A outbreak has been declared at a nursing home in New Norfolk, with dining rooms closed and families asked to limit visits.

Several residents and some staff at Corumbene’s residential aged care facility have recently tested positive for the virus, the provider said in a statement.

Public health officials have been notified.

Residents with symptoms are being isolated where possible, while visitors and staff are wearing personal protective equipment when in direct contact with those affected.

The facility’s dining rooms and Linkway Cafe have closed, with residents now receiving meals in their rooms.

Group activities have also been suspended until further notice, although staff will continue to provide activities and opportunities for social interaction.

“We kindly request only essential visitations at this time from families and relatives to limit the risk of further transmission,” Corumbene said in a statement.

The statement also warned families of potential industrial action at the facility as Corumbene continues negotiations with staff over workplace agreements.

“We feel we are close to finalising an agreement, but you may notice some staff wearing badges and campaign clothing,” the statement said.

Corumbene said it was working to ensure any industrial action did not directly affect the care or wellbeing of residents.

“Corumbene remains committed to achieve a positive and mutually beneficial outcome and will continue to negotiate with the unions in good faith,” the statement said.

The provider said it would keep families informed about both the outbreak and the negotiations.

“We wish to reassure you that Corumbene’s first priority is the health, safety and wellbeing of the older people in our care,” it said.
