An inquest is currently underway to examine the deaths of an elderly Sandy Bay couple who passed away just two days apart in March 2016.
David and Nelda Edwards were discovered to have opioids and sedatives in their systems when they died, with the ‘close proximity’ leading Police to investigate both deaths at the time.
During the inquest, 90-year-old David and 88-year-old Nelda were described as ‘best friends’ who were ‘devoted’ to each other and had been married for 68 years.
Their son, Steven Edwards, was previously charged with the murder of his mother after she was allegedly administered a cocktail of drugs by the then GP, but had the charges dropped after he himself became ‘gravely ill’.
Robert Edwards, their other son, was charged with conspiring to pervert the course of justice but also saw those charges dropped in 2020.
According to the inquest, both parents stopped eating and drinking approximately a week before their deaths upon learning of their other son’s passing in Thailand.
The inquest will continue to examine the case, with both Steven and Robert Edwards denying any responsibility for their parents deaths.
