Tasmanians who were impacted by the devastating floods of October 2022 are being encouraged to share their experiences in the aftermath, as a federal parliamentary inquiry into the insurance industry’s response gets underway.

Exceptionally heavy rainfall affected both the north-west and north of the state during last year’s event, leading to severe flooding in some communities.

Evacuation orders were issued for around 20 towns along the Mersey and Meander rivers, with several dozen properties affect by the flooding.

The inquiry is looking at major floods claims in Tasmania alongside Victoria, New South Wales and South-East Queensland.

It will look at policyholders’ experiences before, during and after making claims, different insurance contracts, and claim resolution timeframes.

People who faced obstacles in resolving claims due to access issues, temporary housing, labor conditions, supply chains, insurer communication or accessibility and affordability of reports are also being encouraged to share their experiences.

The inquiry will also examine insurance affordability and internal dispute resolution processes.

Flood-affected individuals can share their experiences through a 10-minute online survey available here.
