Invasive Weed Threatens Hobart’s kunanyi/Mount Wellington

Hobart and Fern Tree residents are being urged to be on the lookout for a flowering, highly invasive alpine weed that is threatening to take over the slopes of the iconic kunanyi/Mount Wellington.

The City of Hobart wants the Orange Hawkweed, a plant that is running rampant on the mountain and destroying native vegetation, gone.

The Hawkweed is said to have a very fibrous root and can regenerate easily if not fully removed.

Despite the devastating effects it has on Australia’s native flora, the Orange Hawkweed is protected in parts of Europe.

Outdoor enthusiasts are asked to be vigilant, particularly around the Springs visitor area, and to report any sightings of the Orange Hawkweed to the Hobart City Council.
