Kingborough Council has taken a major step in addressing the issue of domestic violence in the community by voting unanimously to donate land to the Hobart Women’s Shelter.
Established in 1974, the shelter provides safe, emergency accommodation and support to women and children affected by family violence and/or those experiencing homelessness.
The donated land will be used to construct up to nine units, helping to address the overwhelming demand for support.
Before a final vote on the subdivision, there will be a public feedback period.

Yesterday’s council meeting heard that 80% of women seeking help in 2020-2021 were turned away due to high demand, highlighting the pressing need for increased support for women and children affected by domestic violence.
Councillor Flora Fox showed grudging support for the initiative, emphasising the ‘urgent social need’ and the dire circumstances faced by women affected by domestic violence, rather than protecting council resources.
