Walking trails on kunanyi/Mt Wellington will temporarily close later this morning as Helicopters are called in to complete the next stage of a restoration project.

The City of Hobart say helicopter will be used to airlift materials from the Old Hotel Site at The Springs to various locations on the mountain, starting early Tuesday morning and continuing into the late afternoon.

“Pinnacle Road will remain open to all traffic. The Old Hotel Site loop road and car park and all walking tracks in the vicinity, will be closed during helicopter operations,” the council say.

“The Zig Zag Track restoration project will make the track a safer walking route while maintaining its important heritage values and bush feel.”

The off-limits to hikers will include the Zig Zag Track, Pinnacle Track, Sawmill Track, Organ Pipes Track and the Milles Track from the Pinnacle Track intersection to the Old Hotel Site.

The project began in January 2022 and is currently into its third stage, which is scheduled for completion in early 2024.
