A corner says we may never know what caused a fatal head-on crash on the Bass Highway in October of last year because of a lack of evidence.
Graham Seth Wells, 68, tragically lost his life at the scene of the crash near Latrobe on October 22, 2022, after suffering fatal injuries to his chest, spine, pelvis and limbs.
In his newly published findings, Coroner Simon Cooper said Wells was driving a Ford Focus from Devonport towards Launceston when he “crossed over the centre line” and into the path of a Hyundai, driven by a young mum with her 10-month-old baby.
“At the time of the crash, it was raining and the road was wet,” Coroner Cooper said.
“A subsequent inspection of Mr Wells’ motor vehicle showed it to have had non-compliant rear tyres, however, it seems unlikely that those tyres alone caused or contributed to the happening of the crash.”
He said there was no evidence that alcohol or drugs were involved and that the 23-year-old driver of the other vehicle was “in no way to blame” for the crash.
“There is no evidence that enables a conclusion as to why Mr Wells’ vehicle left its lane and ran into the path of the [Hyundai].”
