Four Tasmanian athletes are competing at the under-20 Athletics World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, with events running through to Sunday.
Hammer thrower Xavier Leauma from Eastern Suburbs Athletics Club in Hobart, decathlete Xavier Davie from UTAS Athletics Club in Launceston and heptathletes Izzy Wing from North Launceston Athletics Club and Bailey Van Den Broek from OVA Athletics Club in Hobart have all made the trip to the United States.
Tasmanian Institute of Sport Athletics State Performance Advisor Jason Allie said the group had all enjoyed breakthrough seasons.
“I have been told we have not had four athletes head to the world juniors in over 20 years,” he said.
“This is a great testament to the consistent work the athletes and coaches put into training.”
“The TIS is proud to be supporting these Tasmanian athletes and it is great for them to get this opportunity to compete at the highest level.”
Wing, 19 and Van Den Broek, 18, claimed a Tasmanian one-two in the heptathlon at the recent national championships.
Wing also claimed several state records this season.
Van Den Broek is set to stay in the US afterwards to take up an athletics scholarship.
Davie, 17, of UTAS Athletics Club, won a decathlon silver medal at the national championships.
Fellow 17-year-old Leauma has broken several state records during the season and will contest the hammer throw.
Allie said he was reluctant to put pressure on the athletes but noted recent results justified their place on the global stage.
He hoped they continued their career trajectory with a home Olympic Games just six years away.
“These athletes are on a good projection and it’s great to see Tasmanians competing at international events,” he said.
