A late-night severe thunderstorm warning has been issued by the Bureau of Meteorology as wet and wild weather moves across Tasmania.
The north-western part of the state, including Smithton and Waratah, is currently under a severe weather warning, which was issued just before 12:30am on Wednesday.
“An unstable, warm and very humid airmass ahead of a cold front is generating severe thunderstorms in the northwest of Tasmania,” the BOM say.
“Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding in the warning area over the next several hours.”
The State Emergency Service had previously cautioned that Tuesday, which had been the warmest day of the year for much of the state, would be short-lived due to incoming thunderstorms and strong winds.
“Tasmanians please be prepared, we’re in for all seasons in the next few days. It’s going to be warm, then wet, then windy,” the SES said on Tuesday.
“[On Wednesday] a band of tropical rain is forecast to cross Tasmania with thunderstorms likely statewide. Severe thunderstorms, with potential to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding is likely across Northern Tasmania, including Launceston.”
“Thursday will see a low pressure system pass through the South of Tasmania with the potential for damaging westerly winds with gusts around 100km/h possible.”
People are strongly advised to secure outdoor items, including furniture and play equipment, in advance and to be prepared for possible power outages.
Driving, walking or riding through flood waters is also not advised and if you need to seek shelter, the SES recommends going indoors and avoiding taking cover under trees.
