The Launceston City Council has approved plans for a new 24/7 McDonald’s restaurant with a drive-thru, despite concerns from locals about traffic and pedestrian safety.
The new outlet will be located on Invermay Road, at the site of the former James Nelson textile mill.
Once complete, it will bring the total number of McDonald’s restaurants in greater Launceston to five.
Councillors extensively debated the plan and its potential impact on the surrounding area during a meeting late last week.

Some raised concerns about traffic congestion, drive-thru queues extending onto the footpath, pedestrian safety and the potential impact on nearby residential areas and a school.
In response, the council added an amendment requiring additional safety signage near the drive-thru exit.

According to a traffic management plan, the new restaurant is expected to generate 170 vehicle movements per hour during peak times.
Councillors Tim Walker, George Razay and Susie Cai opposed the plan, while the majority voted to approve the development.
The new McDonald’s represents a $5 million investment in the area and is expected to create around 100 jobs.
