Organisers of a free kite-flying day in Launceston’s northern suburbs are hoping to bring generations together again this Sunday, after the event drew around 350 people last year.
Let’s Fly Together, now in its third year, will run from 11am to 2pm at the football oval on Brooks Road at the University of Tasmania’s Newnham campus.
Residents and service providers are organising the day through the Community Champions Network and the Community Together 7248 Action Group, with support from City Mission’s Project North.
City Mission’s operations manager for community development, Ray Green, said the event gave people of different ages and backgrounds a chance to spend time together and get to know each other.

“You might have a grandparent who hasn’t flown a kite for years alongside a child trying it for the first time,” he said.
“It gives people something to share and a reason to stop and talk.”

The event falls during Seniors Month and Children’s Week and marks the end of the school holidays. Families are encouraged to bring older relatives along and residents to invite a neighbour.
Green said the day reflected work throughout the year to support community connections in the area.
“Local people are helping organise this day for their own community. Their ideas, time and effort are what make it possible, alongside the support of volunteers and partner organisations,” he said.
Visitors can bring their own kite, borrow one on the day or buy one for $20, with limited numbers available.

The program includes live music, salsa dancers, a ukulele group, face painting, balloon entertainment, PCYC activities, raffles and giveaways.
A free barbecue will be provided, with coffee, sweet treats and Afghan bolani for sale.
“You don’t need to know anyone or have flown a kite before,” Green said.
