Launceston man charged after allegedly assaulting person, striking police car

A 25-year-old Launceston man has been charged after allegedly assaulting someone and striking a police vehicle in the city centre on Wednesday evening.

Police were called to the York Street area around 5:30pm following reports of a disturbance and assault.

Officers arrived and allege the man hit the police vehicle a number of times before he was safely arrested at the scene.

He was charged with common assault, destroying property and behaving in a violent manner.

“Whilst there were no serious injuries or damage, the incident was confronting, harmful and concerning for those involved,” Inspector Aleena Crack said.
