The Mayor of Launceston has called for the resignation of Councillor Danny Gibson following allegations of historical inappropriate conduct.
Gibson stands accused of making unwanted advances towards multiple young men in the theatre scene, which, according to the ABC, included physical contact, phone calls and text messages.
“While I have no power to force any councillor to resign, I have written to Cr Gibson asking him to stand down,” Mayor Matthew Garwood said in a statement to the ABC on Tuesday.
“This will also allow him the time and focus required to deal with the allegations made, and allow our council to continue with its work in the best interests of our community.”
Garwood said he understood Gibson, who was absent from last Thursday’s council meeting after the allegations were published, intends to take a period of leave.
“But councillors and I have formed the view that it is in the best interests of the Council and wider community for Cr Gibson to step down from his role,” he said.
“It’s important that the City of Launceston continues to move forward on behalf of our municipality.”
Gibson has not yet responded to the allegations or the Mayor’s call for his resignation.
He abruptly resigned as Mayor in 2023 after just seven months in the role, citing relentless attacks and speculation.
