Launceston school staffer arrested over 2019 child abuse allegations after extensive police investigation

A Launceston man has been arrested over child abuse allegations dating back five years.

Tasmania Police charged the 34-year-old on Friday for the offences that allegedly occurred in 2019.

The man has reportedly been the subject of an extensive police investigation since 2023.

He will appear in the Launceston Magistrates Court on 5 June, facing two charges of penetrative sexual abuse of a child or young person.

While police did not confirm the man’s employment, it is understood he was a staff member at St Patrick’s College.

A spokesperson from Catholic Education Tasmania confirmed on Friday afternoon that a member of their staff had been charged.

“We understand the potential impact this may have on the College community,” the spokesperson said.

“Our priority remains the well-being and support of our students and staff.”

“We will be working closely with members of the College and broader community to provide them with support during this time.”

They added that “no further comment” would be given.
