The Launceston City Council is preparing to begin an $11 million rebuild of Margaret Street, bringing wider footpaths, safer crossings, more trees and a new cycleway.

The council says the project will replace ageing infrastructure while making the street greener, safer and more inviting.

Mayor Matthew Garwood said the works would deliver a complete renewal of the street.

“Planned improvements include new street trees, upgraded lighting, wider paved footpaths, safer pedestrian crossings, traffic-calming measures and a dedicated separated cycleway designed for riders of all ages and abilities,” he said.

“This is exactly what local government should be doing … creating a street that will serve our community for decades to come.”

Garwood said supporting active transport was a key focus for the council.

He said the bike lane had been designed to help people feel safe while riding without disadvantaging those who relied on cars.

The upgrades were also intended to attract more people to the city centre and support local businesses.

“Margaret Street is an important connection between our neighbourhoods and the city centre and this project gives us the opportunity to create a street that is greener, safer and more inviting,” he said.

“As well as renewing essential infrastructure, we’re investing in a public space that encourages people to walk, ride, visit local businesses and enjoy spending time in the city.”

“The final design reflects the needs of the people who use Margaret Street every day.”

The work will be delivered in two stages.

Stage two, from Frederick Street to Paterson Street, remains in the early planning stages and is expected to follow next year.
