A young motorcyclist, who had only held a learner’s licence for just six months, has been fined after he was caught speeding down the East Tamar Highway at 140km/h.
Highway Patrol detected the 17-year-old travelling along the Launceston highway between Mowbray and Newnham around 7pm on Wednesday.
Senior Constable Christopher Rockliff said the rider was then detected travelling in excess of 100km/h along George Town Road at Rocherlea, which has a speed limit of 60km/h.
“Such high speeds by young, inexperienced riders can have tragic consequences, and thankfully this was not the case in this instance,” Rockliff said.
The teenager was located by police a short time later at a nearby service station.
Rockliff said the rider had a maximum speed limit licence condition of 80km/h and has now lost his licence for seven months, had his bike confiscated and been fined more than $1,100.
“Motorcyclists are one of the most vulnerable road user groups, particularly new riders and police urge all riders to ride within their ability and limits,” he said.
