A fundraiser has been launched to support a Western Australian mother left seriously injured after an alleged family violence attack in northern Tasmania last week.
The woman, identified only as Sarah, was allegedly stabbed at a home in Exeter on July 24 before her partner fled the scene and was involved in a crash that killed Winkleigh nurse, wife and mother of two Elaine Gee.
Sarah remains in hospital facing a long physical and emotional recovery.
Her two young daughters are now being cared for by their aunt and uncle, Coby and Adam Gore, in Gravelly Beach.
The girls had previously lived with the couple and are returning to a familiar and stable home.
Set up by a family friend, the fundraiser will help cover immediate and ongoing costs including clothing, food, schooling, transport, counselling and medical expenses while Sarah recovers.
In an update shared on behalf of the family, they said Sarah was not in a position to speak publicly.
“Sarah remains in hospital recovering from serious injuries sustained during the family violence incident,” the statement said.
“While her survival is something her family is profoundly grateful for, she faces a long physical and emotional recovery.”
The statement said the girls “were exposed to traumatic events that no child should ever have to experience” and that supporting their wellbeing remained the family’s highest priority.
The family also acknowledged the loss suffered by Elaine Gee’s loved ones.
“Elaine was a beloved wife, mother, friend and dedicated nurse whose death has left an immeasurable void in the lives of those who knew and loved her,” the statement said.
A fundraiser for Gee’s family has raised more than $200,000 in just a couple of days.
The family of Sarah has asked for privacy as everyone affected continues to recover and grieve.
Nearly $20,000 has been raised so far in around 24 hours.
