As students return to school for another year, drivers are being reminded to slow down in school zones and around school buses.

The Road Safety Advisory Council’s ‘Love 40’ campaign has returned for its fifth year, aiming to emphasise the importance of reducing speed for drivers.

Respecting a 40km/h speed limit provides drivers with a better chance of avoiding collisions and increases the likelihood of survival in case a young or elderly person is hit by a car.

“It is our duty as drivers to take extra care on the roads, as children do not always keep this in mind,” Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Michael Ferguson said.

“The most dangerous part of a child’s journey to school is when they are getting in or out of a school bus or car.”

Since 2018, there have been 19 incidents involving children aged between 4 and 15 in school zones.

Tasmania Police will be actively enforcing the rules, deploying officers to school zones alongside mobile speed camera units.

“The more we can do to create safe road environments, the safer our communities will be,” Ferguson said.
