Residents living near the Derwent River north of New Norfolk have been told to evacuate immediately as major flooding is expected in the next 12 hours.
The alert applies to people from Meadowbank to Macquarie Plains and the Styx River from Bushy Park to Macquarie Plains.
Tasmania SES issued the emergency warning on Sunday evening, saying floodwaters are likely to impact several areas, including Glenora, Bushy Park, Gretna and Macquarie Plains.
The Bureau of Meteorology has also issued a major flood warning for the Derwent River, predicting the river will exceed the minor flood level at New Norfolk overnight.
“During the next 12 hours, some properties are likely to become isolated and/or inundated by flood waters,” the SES said.
“Flood waters are a threat to safety. Property, livestock, equipment and crops are likely to be threatened by flood waters.”
The SES advises residents to activate their flood emergency plans if they have one and prepare their properties by moving furniture and possessions to higher ground, securing loose items and moving livestock and equipment to safer areas.
Two evacuation centres have been set up at the Derwent Valley Sports & Recreation Centre and the Memorial Hall in New Norfolk.
“For life-threatening emergencies, dial triple zero (000),” the SES said.
“For emergency flood and storm assistance call the SES on 132 500.”
