The Zig Zag Track, a major walking route to the summit of kunanyi/Mt Wellington, is set to close for extensive maintenance works this month.

The City of Hobart say the track, which has been in use for over a century, has been affected by erosion and other natural elements, making it unsafe for visitors.

The first stage of the restoration project, which started in January 2022, has already seen 200 metres of stone work completed above the Pinnacle Track intersection.

Now, the second stage of the project is set to begin on January 23rd. To ensure a safe working environment, the Zig Zag Track will be closed to visitors during this time, with an expected completion date of mid-2023.

While the Zig Zag Track is closed, alternative access to The Pinnacle will be available via the Milles Track, Icehouse Track and South Wellington Track – All routes that are considered to be harder, longer, and better suited to experienced walkers.

There will also be reduced car parking at the Old Hotel Site at The Springs and occasional helicopter operations may lead to short-term closures of nearby tracks as well as the Old Hotel Site.

Visitors are urged to plan ahead and be prepared for the alternative routes and closures.

The project is expected to cost around $500,000 and will involve the repair of erosion affected areas, the installation of drainage and the creation of new steps and rock walls to make the track safer for walkers and runners.
