Tasmania Police are searching for a man who allegedly followed another driver through Launceston traffic before assaulting him in a hardware store car park.
The young man was sitting in his car at the western end of the Bunnings car park in Kings Meadows when he was allegedly attacked at 4:20pm on Thursday.
Police are investigating whether the assault is linked to an earlier road rage incident on Wellington Street.
That incident involved the driver of a white Mazda 3 and the male driver of a white dual cab ute, police said.
The Mazda driver told police he was followed from Wellington Street to the Bunnings store on Connector Park Drive, where the other driver confronted him.
The man police are seeking is described as being in his late 20s to early 30s and about 178 centimetres tall, with short brown or red hair and a short beard.
He was wearing sunglasses, a black T-shirt, cargo pants and steel-capped boots.
Police are asking anyone who saw the assault or who has dashcam footage of either incident to come forward.
Tasmania introduced a specific road rage offence on September 11, with a maximum penalty of a $10,650 fine or six months in jail.
The offence covers driving in a way likely to cause alarm or fear, as well as threatening or abusive words and gestures linked to driving.
