Man dies in Richmond shed fire believed to be deliberately lit

A man has died in a shed fire at Richmond, in Tasmania’s south-east, as police investigate whether the blaze was deliberately lit.

Emergency services were called to the structure fire on Prossers Road around 6:25am on Friday.

Tasmania Fire Service crews extinguished the fire, which was burning inside a six-metre by nine-metre steel shed next to a house.

The body of a man was found inside. Police believe he was an adult who regularly used the shed.

In a statement, Tasmania Police said the fire was “believed to have been deliberately lit”.

“Investigations are ongoing in relation to the cause of the fire … to determine if there are any suspicious circumstances,” police said.

It was not the only fire in the area on Friday morning.

Police are also investigating a second blaze on Bridge Street at Richmond, which was reported around 5:50am.

“Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the deceased,” police said.

Anyone with information about either fire or any suspicious activity in the area is being urged to come forward.
