Man in red balaclava allegedly carrying knife arrested in Launceston

A man has been taken into custody in Launceston after he was allegedly spotted carrying a knife in the city centre.

Police received a report around 1:45pm that a man was allegedly armed with a knife in the Brisbane Street area.

Officers responded quickly and took the man into custody a short time later in nearby Henry Street.

A knife allegedly in the man’s possession was seized by police.

No injuries were reported.

A witness told Pulse the man was wearing a red balaclava and had been riding an unregistered off-road bike around shoppers in the pedestrian Brisbane Street Mall.

The witness said police confirmed to them the man allegedly pulled a knife further along Brisbane Street in the area known as The Avenue.

The witness also claimed the man had previously ridden through the Mall on July 25 and July 27, with those incidents captured on CCTV.
