Mayors, former Greens leader front-runners in Tasmania’s Upper House election race

A Green, a Liberal and an Independent are leading the vote to claim seats across Legislative Council divisions Elwick, Hobart and Prosser.

After a day of polling, Tasmanian Electoral Commissioner Andrew Hawkey released provisional results from the counting of first preference votes on Saturday night.

Glenorchy Mayor Bec Thomas currently holds a leading position in Elwick with 33.96% of the vote, followed by Tessa McLaughlin with 28.90%.

Fabiano Cangelosi and Janet Shelley are both trailing behind with 18.97% and 18.17% respectively.

Former Greens Leader Cassy O’Connor is holding the Hobart division with 37.16% of the vote, while Hobart City Councillor John Kelly has 22.14%.

John Kamara and Charlie Burton each have 18.17% and 13.92% respectively and the remaining candidates collectively less than 10%.

In Prosser, Liberal and Sorell Mayor Kerry Vincent leads with 38.71% of the vote, followed by Bryan Green with 28.46%.

The other three candidates each hold less than 15% of the total vote.

“Rechecking of polling place first preferences will commence on Monday, together with the counting of provisional and out-of-division votes,” Hawkey said.

“Further counts are expected later in the week and will include outstanding postal, interstate pre-poll, Antarctic and telephone votes.”
