A memorial service was held this morning at Hobart’s Constitution Dock for the two sailors who died in the 2024 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race.
Nick Smith from New South Wales and South Australian Roy Quaden were killed on the first night of the race on December 26th.
Smith was a crew member on board the yacht Bowline and Quaden was on Flying Fish Arctos.
CYCA Commodore Sam Haynes paid tribute to the men, saying they “tragically lost their lives while competing in our race”.
“Both men embraced the spirit of adventure and camaraderie that defines our sport.”
“We extend our deepest condolences to Nick’s son and daughter, Roy’s wife and two daughters, their extended families, their friends, their fellow crew members and all those in our sailing community who feel this profound loss.”
“As we bid farewell, let us take a moment to reflect on their courage, their passion for the sea and the joy they found in the endless horizon.”
“Fair winds and following seas dear friends, may a gentle breeze forever fill your sails and guide you to peaceful waters.”
“May your spirits now be free to roam the eternal ocean where the sky meets the sea and every journey is endless.”
“You will forever be part of our crew, carried by the tides of love and memory.”
“Rest in peace Nick and Roy.”
Commodore Haynes from the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia and Commodore Stephen McCullum from the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania place two wreaths at dockside.
Representatives from both Flying Fish Arctos and Bowline scattered flowers into the water at the end of the service.
The memorial service was concluded with a minute’s silence.
