Metro staff threaten strike action as shortages reach crisis point

Mechanics at Metro Tasmania are threatening to go on strike due to statewide staff shortages.

About one-third of mechanic positions across the state are currently vacant, with the state-owned business driving mechanics from Hobart to the Launceston depot to service buses due to a lack of staff.

Unionised Metro mechanics have voted on taking strike action, with the results to be revealed next week.

The shortage of mechanics and apprentices is common across the transport industry, according to Metro Tasmania CEO Kate Cooper.

The company is in enterprise agreement negotiations with its engineering staff and has contingency plans in place to minimise disruption.

Metro Tasmania is currently conducting a recruitment campaign to address the staff shortages.
