A stretch of the Midland Highway at Kempton will soon drop from 110km/h to 90km/h after the Commissioner for Transport approved a speed limit change near the Mood Food service station.
The lower limit will cover a 630-metre section of the highway around the service station’s entrance and exit.
It follows several requests from the public and an assessment by Building Tasmania, which found the stretch has a high crash history.
Eleven crashes have been reported on the section over the past five years, including a serious crash involving a dirt bike on May 30 this year and three people rushed to hospital from a two-vehicle crash in November 2023.
The reduced speed limit is designed to give drivers more time to react to oncoming traffic or vehicles turning in and out of the service station.
New speed limit signs are expected to be installed sometime next week.
The change will take effect once the signs are in place.
Warning signs reading “new speed limit ahead” will also be put up to alert drivers.
