Over half of Tasmania’s main streetlamps have been replaced with new and more energy-efficient LED models.
With the rest expected to be completed in the next two years, the modern lights have a much longer lifecycle and replace old and dated mercury vapor lamps across the state.
Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Michael Ferguson says the state will save on its power bill, with the new LEB lights using 82% less power.
“Crucially, the LED globes reduce the impact on our environment with an estimated 80 percent reduction in emissions,” Ferguson said.
“The energy saved from this program allows more of our renewable energy to be utilized in our network.”
More than 1,000 lights have already been replaced on the state-managed road network by 12 Tasmanians employed on the project.
