Police have seized a motorbike and questioned a man after a rider allegedly accelerated into a group of officers on a Tasmanian highway, striking several of them with a side mirror before speeding off.
The officers escaped injury, but police say the incident could have ended far worse.
It unfolded on the Bass Highway at Prospect around 10pm on August 15, as road policing officers were responding to a separate matter.
A motorcycle approached at speed, slowed and briefly stopped, then accelerated towards the officers, striking several of them with a side mirror and snapping it off.
The rider fled without stopping.
Investigators spent the following days tracking down the unregistered bike, eventually seizing it from a Summerhill home on Tuesday.
A search of the property also turned up a backpack containing a motorcycle helmet, a replica firearm and a quantity of illicit drugs.
A 36-year-old Summerhill man has since been questioned, with police considering charges.
Commander Marco Ghedini encouraged anyone with information about the rider to come forward.
“Locating and seizing the motorcycle involved is the result of extensive enquiries undertaken to date and as I have said previously, this behaviour simply won’t be tolerated,” he said.
“Our officers have the right to conduct their duties without being put in danger through such idiotic and reckless actions.”
“I’d like to thank investigators for their work on this incident and have every confidence they will achieve further results and lay charges against the person responsible.”
