Motorcyclist airlifted to hospital after crash at Pipers River

Updated 8pm, Friday: A motorcyclist is in a serious condition in hospital after colliding with a ute on Bridport Road at Pipers River on Friday afternoon.

Police and emergency services were called to the scene about 2:08pm.

The rider, a man in his 40s, was travelling behind a white Toyota Hilux when the ute turned right.

The Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle struck the driver’s side door of the Hilux.

The rider was airlifted to the Royal Hobart Hospital in a serious condition.

The driver of the ute, a 27-year-old man, was taken to the George Town Hospital to provide blood and alcohol samples.

Bridport and Weymouth Roads were closed for several hours while crash investigators examined the scene.

Police thanked motorists for their patience during the closures.

Earlier: A motorcyclist has been airlifted to hospital after a crash with a car in the state’s north-east this afternoon.

Tasmania Police said the rider was treated at the scene on Bridport Road at Pipers River before being flown out by helicopter.

The crash happened near 5049 Bridport Road, with emergency services called to the scene shortly before 3:20pm on Friday.

The intersection of Bridport Road and Weymouth Road was closed to allow the helicopter to land.

The extent of the rider’s injuries is not yet known.

“Motorists are asked to avoid the area while emergency services attend the scene,” police said.
