A rescue helicopter was deployed to the remote area and located the man, who was winched from the mountain and flown to the Royal Hobart Hospital for treatment.

Tasmania Police said the man was an experienced bushwalker who was well prepared for the hike.

Police used the incident as a reminder for bushwalkers to take safety precautions before heading into the Tasmanian wilderness.

They advised against walking alone and urged hikers to carry sufficient warm clothing, food and emergency communication devices.

Bushwalkers are also encouraged to research their intended trip, ensure the route is within their fitness level and check the weather forecast before setting out.

Police said hikers should always let someone know their planned route and expected return time.
